Hamamatsu Photonics Develops Micro LED Rapid Detection System

- Mar 10, 2021-

According to foreign media reports, Japanese light detector manufacturer Hamamatsu Photonics has developed a high-speed inspection system that can quickly inspect the quality of Micro LED chips on a wafer.

It is reported that the detection system is called MiNY PL. It uses photoluminescence test technology (PL) to detect abnormalities in the appearance, luminous intensity and wavelength of LED chips. The photoluminescence test technology used is based on Hamamatsu Photon’s image processing technology and new The imaging module developed.

Hamamatsu Photonics stated that the MiNY PL system can quickly determine whether the chip is qualified when testing Micro LED chips, which is conducive to improving the yield of Micro LED products for display and the efficiency of Micro LED R&D.

In addition, the MiNY PL system will simplify 100% of the inspection process on the Micro LED mass production line in the future.

Coincidentally, there was news recently that Apple is developing a Micro LED inspection system and has obtained related patents.

Apple's system detects and accurately locates the quality of the Micro LED chip before it is transferred to the display panel. The purpose is also to reduce the defect rate and production process loss, thereby improving the reliability of the display and ensuring product quality.

Micro LED size shrinks, the number of chips used and the workload of the transfer bonding process have greatly increased. If the chip defect rate is too high, it will reduce the production yield of subsequent processes, increase the workload of rework and the overall cost. Therefore, it is particularly critical to control the production yield from the front-end process such as detecting the quality of the chip, but this is also one of the difficulties in the Micro LED industry.

To this end, many equipment manufacturers have increased their research and development efforts on Micro LED testing equipment, and the current progress is uneven. Regardless of the specific details, the relevant news now shows that there has been a breakthrough in the chip quality inspection link, which is great news for the Micro LED industry.
